Diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder among children continues to rise every year. In 2019, classic conventional medicine has labeled over 10% of children (under 18 years old) with this complex neurodevelopmental disorder. The symptoms vary person-to-person making this awfully difficult to recognize. Most physicians avoid the tiring search for the root cause of why these children act so "abnormally".

Instead, the common protocol is to blunt the developing child's brain with pill-prescriptions that must be taken daily to prevent these typical reactions:
- Difficulty focusing
- Fidgeting
- Daydreaming
- Problems playing quietly
- Trouble waiting turn (impatience)
- Emotional instability (i.e. temper tantrums)
- Weak organization skills
- Forgetfulness
According to a CDC report in 2016, "Approximately 9.4% of children 2-17 years of age (6.1 million) had ever been diagnosed with ADHD". This has exploded 43%+ since 2003 and the average age for moderate ADHD diagnosis is 7 years old (boys are also 3x more likely to be diagnosed than girls).

Let's say the 2nd grader, Little Debbie, is taken to Doctor Dull's office because she is having trouble being quiet, sitting still, & she tends to distract other students in class. She didn't always act this way, but recently her parents stopped making her school lunch (which is typically packed with carrots, hummus, fruit, & nuts) and for the past couple of months she's been eating cafeteria "food".
Dr. Dull has a brief conversation with Little Debbie and her parents. After this quick encounter — because Dr. Dull has 19 other clients in line for the day — he concludes that she no doubt has ADHD. Dr. Dull pressures the parents the best solution is for Little Debbie to take a starter dose of Dextroamphetamine Saccharate, a form of Adderall, 5 mg once or twice daily. "Give her first dose on awakening; additional doses (1 or 2) at intervals of 4 to 6 hours."
Sounds reasonable, right.
From that point onward, poor Little Debbie will be put on a restrictive leash and will live far from a natural, sober, & genuine state of mind. She's locked into this false sense of reality. This pill-poppin' creates long-term backlashes, even after discontinued use, including:
- Irritability/agitation
- Restlessness (i.e. insomnia)
- Dulled personality
- Social anxiety (i.e. fear & nervousness)
- Dizziness or headaches
- Lack of appetite (causing harmful weight loss)
- Increased heart rate (i.e palpitations)
- Increased blood pressure
So, what we did here is swap out other distasteful traits for a plethora of disastrous and depleting symptoms. Ironic & counterintuitive, eh?

What happens when you give a young child, let's say a 5-year-old, some happy, healthy, colorful Fruit Loops in a large bowl of milk with a sugary cup of OJ?
Well, 9 times out of 10 that child is going to throw a fit until they get more & more, and before you know it, the entire box is empty and the OJ carton is dry as a bone!
Now imagine if this form of nutrition is given to a developing youngster daily for weeks, which transcribes into months, then morphs into years. Not to mention that their school lunch consists of Bosco Sticks with ranch dressing, canned fruit, and a Little Debbie Cosmic Brownie. Oh, and of course they also had their daily dose of Diet Soda.
For some odd reason, the child grows impatient, loud/distracting in class, can't seem to focus on one task at a time, gains weight, and has emotional outbreaks.
Do these adverse effects sound familiar?
My point is, the main underlying reason millions of children in the US are having these rough mental & physical conditions is because they are not being fed REAL food. There is far too much ultra-processed, sugar & vegetable oil drenched food-like products being piled on their plates. Kids are fed these man-made chemicals day-in and day-out which ends up corroding a once fluent thought-process.
All human beings, especially children, require a high-level of antioxidants, vitamins & minerals, healthy fats (omega-3s in fatty wild-caught fish, walnuts, avocado, olive oil, etc), fiber, clean water (fluoride, chlorine, & heavy metal-free), phytochemicals, and a full-spectrum of nutrients in order to sprout healthy, efficient, & balanced brains.
Our Western culture needs to divert away from standard conventional medicine. Physicians must stop dulling personality & unique imaginative qualities with Adderall, Ritalin, Concerta, Focalin, Vyvanse, Dexedrine, and so on. If we continue this rate of prescriptions, our future generations are going to be less productive, stable-minded, and socially equipped for any situation in life.

It's a shame that there has been so little research into the benefits of eating well, but I hope that will change soon.
We should be working on the maternal microbiome before the child even steps foot out of the womb. This depends on the mother's lifestyle choices; especially nutrition. In order to prevent these neurological disorders from developing in the first place, the momma must avoid those bad fats (PUFAs) and excessive sugar.
These two factors influence SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth), IBS, Candida, and can cause a whole slew of digestive issues. They inhibit proper nutrient absorption required for the sprouting baby and she can end up transferring severe autoimmune complications.
Although we truly don't know the exact mechanism to why ADHD (and other neurological complications like Autism) develop, according to the latest research, it seems to correlate with poor nutrition, insufficient exercise, and environmental toxins (i.e. tainted water supply, GMOs/pesticides, synthetic materials, & heavy metal exposure). This includes the baby's genetic predisposition from the mother, as well as childhood factors.

Yes, you cannot completely avoid these environmental toxins, but you can be sure to limit how much your child is exposed to. For example, "little" things like avoiding toxic dryer sheets, BPA plastic, GMO foods, and cooking with cast iron instead of copper & other nonstick pans (i.e teflon).

An improved diet will lead to significant changes in one's mood, learning, & social life Throwing out pro-oxidative inflammatory vegetable oils and processed foods will aid in mental clarity, reduce allergies, and improve digestion.
Another reason to be hopeful that the child, or adult, is not permanently stuck in this mindset is the plasticity of the brain. The human brain is capable of regenerating neural pathways throughout our lives.
For instance, someone who undergoes a stroke may have a weakened ability to contract certain muscles, creating bamboozled motor coordination. However with practice their brain can adapt and form new connections returning to their previous healthy state. And the key is to reduce whole-body inflammation, preventing any sort of issues from emerging in the first place.
Someday, I hope to see this long list of synthetic prescriptions dissipate from our children's minds (literally). We can opt for healthier alternatives such as cognitive behavioral therapy, meditation, the power of movement, and most of all, pure wholesome nutrition.
Hello,
I stumbled upon your blog and found it rather interesting as this topic is something I have studied for several years now as I am majoring in special education. I just wanted to challenge the fact that there is no clear scientific research stating that ADHD is caused from sugary food or food at all. Research shows that some food can play a role in symptoms. It is known that ADHD is very over represented. Often times when kids have something going on in their life they show characteristics of ADHD although they should not be labeled as having ADHD because these two concepts are totally different. Lastly, the comment you made about autism’s root cause being from poor…
